Our team loves crawling blogs like TechCrunch, Gizmodo and Engadget not only to stay attuned to technology trends and find our latest drool-worthy toy (enter HD 2) or mobile app, but also because we find more often than not, there is some way that people are using technology that surprises us. Not just "Neat-o!" but "Wow. That's really cool."
It is technology used in unorthodox ways, used to better the world in large and small ways, or even to just make it fun and lighthearted. It is technology like this that seemed Jetson-like not that long ago, but it's here and it's available for use.
It's common to hear people talking about how technology is taking over the world, and a somewhat apprehensive attitude of technology ensues. What our team sees more often than not is technology interacting with the world in truly surprising, natural, helpful and effective ways.
For instance, you might have read about the robotic fish trend. First of all we were surprised that this could even be called a trend. It's like slap bracelets, only way better! There are at least three different robotic fish in development (University of Essex, University of Kitakyushuu, and Polytechnic Institute of New York University) that are designed to handle a myriad of operations: leading endangered schools of fish away from harm, one that detects oceanic pollution, and the other gathers oceanic data. I know we'd like to develop software for fishes.
There are so many other inspiring forms of technology out there, from rich Internet applications to home 3D devices to even fridge software; there is really no limit to what hardware integration and custom software can do.
In order to really pinpoint new realms of technology, some of the best questions that we've found to ask are:
What is something you do every day?
What do you currently use for this operation?
What features would make it easier, more automated, or more interesting?
Are people used to seeing this integrated with technology?
Where do you never find technology?
The last two questions are really the key to seeing new and exciting things, and there are definitely light bulbs going off everywhere as people see opportunities to bring to the world.
