An Organization Extends Help to Those in Need

All alone in the small waiting room of the dental clinic, yet smiling broadly, sat a young black haired woman. Occupying the dental seat was an older woman whose teeth were being examined by a young dentist. Thanks to the low cost services of the clinic, she is able to get dental care which she otherwise couldn't afford.

The dental clinic, which was started by a private non profit organization, has been active for more than 40 years already. Providing health care for pregnant women and infants was what the health clinic of the clinic did in the organization's building for many years. At the clinic, children are provided with dental care. Funds for this have always been private donations, and what one woman left us in her will was what provided a foundation. Prospective patients must come to the clinic for an interview to determine if they are eligible for low cost care. To avoid competition with other area dentists, the clinic rejects people who make enough for private dental care. A sliding scale used by the clinic helps them decide on one's eligibility for the clinic's services and also how much he will be charged. The scale for fees is based on how many are a person's family members and also how big his income is.

The clinic cannot administer low cost dental care to a family of four with a monthly income of $1,000. However, if the same family earned $800 to $1,000 a month, any of its members could receive a dental examination for $8. If the family's income were less than $800 a month, the examination fee would be $5. Private dentists from Santa Fe would charge as much as $15 to 20$ for the same kind of dental examination.

It is common to see patients in their 40's and 50's, and some of them haven't received any dental care in their lives. A lot of the patients in the clinic are children. Clinic dentists gave dental treatment to children who qualified for federally funded special programs of the county early in the winter. The cost of all the dental services and treatment is usually covered by one program.

Presently the clinic only makes weekly schedules for 20 patients, but dentists are still able to take in more. When too many patients failed to meet their dentists at the scheduled time, the secretary changed the system of making appointments so that the days were known by the patients but not the specific times. A first come, first served system is used by dentists in seeing their patients on the appointed day. We show those who come in the different ways they can take care of their teeth. The clinic makes it a point to supply toothbrushes and dental floss for its patients who don't use or own any of these dental hygiene products. The teeth of these patients will look much better when they come back for their next appointment.
