Archos Releases New Touchscreen Tablet

The tech world has been buzzing about Archos new line of Android Tablets

. Today the Archos 32 Internet Tablet was released in the US. Its available exclusively through Archos online store http://store.archos.com.

The Archos 32 Internet Tablet features a resistive 3.2 touch screen interface and runs Android 2.2 (Froyo). The specs after that look pretty sweet as well. First, it has a built-in VGA camcorder (with H264 encoding). Of course, it also has WiFi, and it also supports 802.11n, which is the newest and best wireless yet. Additionally, the new 32 has Bluetooth, which means you can tether it to your cell phone and have internet access wherever you go.

8 GB of internal memory means you have enough room for your favorite music, videos and pictures. The touchscreen tablet has a listed battery life of 6 hours for video playback, 8 hours of web surfing or 24 hours of music. Not bad for an internet device that fits in your pocket and weighs a scant 2.5 oz. A fast processor and a 3D graphics accelerator round out the handsome specs.

The downside is that this Android tablet does run the Android Marketplace out-of-the-box. Archos has a strong fan base with many savvy developers that will no doubt figure out how to load the marketplace. It does come with AppsLib, which gives you access to hundreds of games and apps but not quite the selection as the full Android Marketplace.

At just over 4 x 2, this touchscreen tablet does not intend to compete head-to-head with any specific device, but instead, it carves a new niche out of the tablet market and creates the mini-tablet or smart tablet, if you will. Its kind of a mix between a tablet and a smart phone.

On the horizon is a fleet of more internet tablets from Archos. They will roll out over the next couple months following the lead of this Napoleon-like tablet. Soon well have a sub-$100 Android tablet (2.8 screen), the Archos 43 internet tablet, a new 7 tablet and a 10.1 touch screen tablet that is a strong contender to take the crown away from the iPad.

Until then, Im looking forward to seeing the Archos 32 internet tablet in action. Its priced right at $149.99 and available only through the Archos Store.
