Are Cheap Video, Audio Or Network Cables Just As Good?

You can waste a lot of money buying audio, video

,computer cables, But you can save money by understanding a few simple principles "before" you buy.

Resellers Lie

Many of the well-known companies that sell you cables outright lie about the "benefits" of their products over their competitors. To make matters worse, there is so much profit in selling these inherently cheap cables that they focus on persuading unsuspecting customers into paying for cables that cost pennies and charge tens or hundreds of dollars more than necessary. Popular items such as HDMI, DVI, firewire, svideo (S-Video), RCA, VGA, USB and even Legacy Apple Products, cables and connectors for your iPod or computers, are typically used to overcharge you.

Truth is" expensive cables, offer virtually no difference in picture, audio or network quality over cheap cables. Even buying bulk serial cable can be a rip-off.

All or Nothing

The reason behind this is that the technology used to allow short cables and fairly long cables to carry quite a bit of data, works really well. This means that if something goes wrong, it goes really wrong. Technicians say, "You either get everything perfectly fine, or it"s not right and you get nothing". So if you"re seeing a picture that looks good and there are no dropouts in either sound or video, then you"re getting the entire package sent from the source. If the cable is bad or defective, you"ll just get nothing coming through. No video at all!

But ours just "sound" better

Numerous resellers of cables and wires are constantly claiming that their wire just "sounds" better than other cables, speaking of HDMI, DVI or speaker cables. This is nonsense. If a cable is defective in some way or if something is causing data to be lost from the source to the amplifier, decoders are designed to mute the data rather than send it out. You would hear nothing at all, total dropout. So if you are hearing audio, as long as you"re putting out an audio codec, you"ll get exactly what"s being put in through your disc player, HDTV or even your old legacy Apple products.

Thicker is better

Sometimes more expensive cables and wires can be more durable. Some have thicker casings, a heavier connector, leading you to believe that thicker is better. If this means something to you then just ask yourself, "What is it worth in dollars"? Many customers have found that bulkier cables and plugs that they see on high-cost HDMI cables can be a hazard rather than a help. They fall out or worse yet, pull on the female connector inside your high-priced HDTV or HD Device and generate a high-cost service call or rip the connector from the cable causing you to buy another one. Most service shops will not repair an HDMI cable that lost its connector.

Does size matter?

Most of us only use a few feet of HDMI or DVI cables to run from our Blu-ray player or FIOS/DirecTV cable/satellite box to our TV. Some of us even buy cables in bulk, however, over such short distance, even the cheapest audio/video/ethernet cables will work just fine. As we said earlier, if they work once, you"re getting a perfect image, audio and data. But remember, even over long distances, buy cheap cables. It"s all you need.

Final Word

So watch out for that shifty salesman working in the big-box stores or online ecommerce sites that keep telling you to buy their premium, higher cost, HDMI or DVI cable to make your new 240 Hz TV work and sound better. You"re not lining the cable with more quality; you"re lining their pockets with unnecessary profits. Save your money for that Holographic TV coming down the pike!
