I meet so many people who when we swap business cards

, they actually apologise as they hand theirs to me. I have always found that both odd and slightly aggravating as it is not hugely difficult to rectify if you know how!

So why are business cards important?

Business cards represent you personally as well as the image of your business. They are one of the only items a business associate or client is most likely to keep and if they are poor quality, well what does that say about you and your business?

There are some simple ways to make sure you get the right quality cards that firstly present you and your business in the right way, making sure you leave a strong, positive impression on the people you pass them out to. Secondly you need to make sure you use every space on your business cards to work for you. So often I see cards that are quite simply just a sterile looking name and address. You find out nothing about the company, their products or services, maybe some special offers or one thing that is particularly strong, a simple client testimonial.


So many businesses fail to use the reverse of their business card which is just wasteful. If you put some key marketing messages on the reverse you are making it very simple for your clients find out about your business.

This way you are managing the information a prospective client absorbs about your business. If you give a bland business card, you are leaving it up to your client to find out more about you and your company... if they can be bothered!

If you are giving strong, positive information in your simplest marketing tool, you are tempting your clients to find out more. This will happen both conversationally and potentially later online. If you hand over a quality business card which has bold messages, you are increasing the chance that your client will read it there and then and start chatting to you about what you have put on your business cards. You will have then managed the marketing process rather than left it up to your client to discover more.

Follow these simple tips and next time you hand out your business card to a business associate or prospective client, you have no need to apologise!
