Art and History Come To Life in Kozhikode's Illustrious Pazhassiraja Museum

Affectionately dubbed the land of spices in colonial times, the coastal hamlet of Kozhikode or Calicut served as the commercial and administration capital of Zamorins. Having attracted the likes of Portuguese explorer extraordinaire Vasco da Gama and multitudes of Europeans and Middle Eastern natives to its captivating landscapes it is fair to state that the township of Calicut has witnessed the tides of history and been the focal point of some of its most significant events. Therefore it should be no surprise that one of Kerala's most prolific historic landmarks and museums is also housed within this seaside town.

Located on the East Hill just 5km from the centre of Calicut, the Pazhassiraja Museum is an illustrious institution that deals with the region's art, culture and antiquity all within the environs of what was once a resplendent Malabar bungalow. Established in 1975 the museum derives its name from the regional martyr and folk hero Pazhassiraja Kerala Varma who was also known as the Lion of Kerala. Having orchestrated the 'Pazhassi Revolt' in the 1700s against British rule this iconic figure still reserves a special place in the hearts and minds of Keralites.

Renowned for its extensive collection of relics the museum boasts exquisite mural paintings, copper /silver items, ancient coins and other bronze wares. The quadrangular shaped burial chambers with capstones called dolmenoid cists are another highlight at the venue which also houses collections of umbrella stones, ancient temple models and temple carvings. A number of large scale monuments in bronze and stone are also found within the premises which also houses a captivating Art Gallery in the adjacent building. Known to contain the prized works of Raja Ravi Varma who was dubbed 'The prince among painters and a painter among princes' the art gallery is a rare treat for all art lovers.

Travellers in search of a conveniently located Calicut hotel will be hard-pressed to find a better choice for accommodation to the Gateway Hotel Beach Road Calicut. Located in close proximity to the regional train station and Calicut Beach this charming rest is perfectly situated for hassle-free sightseeing in Calicut
