Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota Encourage Teachers to Apply for Toyota TAPESTRY

Atlantic Toyota and Huntington Toyota support Long Island educators and would like all teachers to know Toyota has a program that awards grants to deserving science teachers.

Atlantic Toyota has found out that Toyota Motor Sales is sponsoring a program managed by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). A total of $500,000 will be awarded in the form of 50 grants at $10,000 each to teachers of kindergarten through 12th grade.

To qualify teachers must be involved in the creation of science projects that improve environmental science education in their district or their school. The project should last more than one year.

Toyota Motor Sales has indicated to Atlantic Toyota that there teachers may also submit proposals for projects, either individually or as a group of up to five educators. There are subcategories within the environmental science education which include:

Biotic (all living factors)

Abiotic (all non-living factors such as pollution, oil, energy, human interventions, water, soil, air, temperature, etc.)

Other requirements for applying include a minimum of two years experience teaching, and the applicants have to be a science teacher actively teaching in the classroom. Applicants must also be residents of the United States; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico or U.S. territories.

The program began in 1990 and has awarded more than $9.2 million so far.

"The new concentration of this year's Toyota TAPESTRY program allows us to maximize our ability to encourage solutions that lead to greener communities and greener technologies," said Jim Lentz, TMS president and chief operating officer in a press release. "Toyota is honored to be celebrating more than two decades of recognizing exceptional teachers who inspire students to form passionate connections with science.We look forward to enhancing environmental education as a result of our continued partnership with NSTA and America's educators."

A panel of judges will determine the winners of grants based on several factors including the project's capability to stimulate students and encourage hands-on learning and participation.
