Attitude - Pillar Number 2 - Goal Setting - Plan Your Day
Now we'll look at Goal Setting - Plan your day
. Not a very popular area for most people, I know. Most folks find the idea of setting goals a bit of a nonsense especially when they consider how busy they are but guess what...that's why we set goals.
Setting goals provide one major benefit and it's the provision of a destination. It may surprise you to know most of us spend more time planning our weekend or holiday than planning where we want to be in five years time.
Many years ago a bright young African American law graduate set himself the goal to be useful to his family and the people who elected him to public office, leaving behind a legacy that will make his children's lives more hopeful than his own.
Today that man, Barack Obama is the first black president of the United States of America. He set a goal and dedicated his life toward achieving it.
Naturally for the purpose of your sales ambitions the size of your goals will be far more achievable. The idea is to set realistic, achievable goals that will take you to an improved place at some point in the future. Author Tim Breithaupt offers a simple system that is easy to follow when setting goals.
The SMART Approach. 1. Goals should be Specific - dates, numbers, times...; 2. Goals should be Measurable - there must be some end result; 3. Goals must be Attainable - to you; 4. Goals must be Relevant - to you; 5. Goals must be Trackable - progress of the goal. A quick example of a SMART goal is. I'm going to make GBP500.00 commission this month, payable on 30th December 2010. Here you have a set date; you know how many calls you need to make to achieve this goal; it's relevant to you personally; and you can assess your progress daily.
I'm not suggesting that because the title of the system, SMART is catchy that it's likely to make you more inclined to get into it or that the system will be a walk in the park to get started. Not at all, I'm suggesting you make an effort to use it because many top achievers have used it and continue to use it. Remember this is about you developing a new improved way to get better results - long term.
I, like my idol, Sir Richard Branson believe that anything worth having is worth working for. Thirty years ago he set his eyes on a beautiful island in the Caribbean, Necker Island and fell in love with it. With no cash but a desire for it he decreed it would be his. Six months after his failed bid for it he mysteriously got it at a price he could afford. He set a goal and worked toward achieving it and you can too.
