, take a stop in Georgia for a little bit of scenic history that you will never forget. This city holds some of the most beautiful churches, historical buildings, canals, and more which will remind you what America was built upon.

First, check out the canal. The Augusta canal was built in 1845 as an navigational aid for cotton boats and to provide power for Augusta's cotton mills.

At enterprise mill, you can visit the Augusta canal interpretive center to learn about the canal and the cotton industry of the beautiful city. You can even take tours of the canal, and learn about its history.

If you are looking for religious architecture, St. James Methodist church was established in 1855. The beautiful brick church you see today was built in the 1870's.


St. James is one of a number of beautiful and historic churches located in downtown Augusta. You can tour the beautiful building, and learn about its history-you will get pictures you will never forget!

By the same token, St. Paul's Episcopal church was established in 1750 on the site of fort Augusta. St. Paul's is one of the oldest churches in Georgia.

The church you see today was built in 1918 after the great fire of 1916. This beautiful Georgian colonial style building was designed by Henry Wendell.

Next to the church is a cemetery dating back to colonial times. If you are interested in more colonial style buildings, try Ware's Folly.

This interesting federal style home was built in 1818 for Mayor Nicholas Ware. It was called Ware's Folly because it cost forty thousand dollars to build at the time.

Forty thousand dollars was a huge amount of money in 1818. As a comparison, fifty years later the large church of the most holy trinity cost forty two thousand dollars to build.

Today Ware's Folly is home to the Gertrude Herbert institute of art. There are numerous exhibits for visitors to see and admire, and guided tours are also available.

It is easy to lose yourself for hours at this beautiful museum. For more beautiful architecture, the Medical College of Georgia is a very special building.

In 1822, Dr. Milton Antony established the medical society of Augusta. He also served as the first president of the Georgia state board of medical examiners.

In 1826, Dr. Antony and Dr. Joseph Adams both received a state charter to establish the medical academy of Georgia. The academy opened in 1828 and was renamed the medical college of Georgia in 1833.

Of interest to tourists is its beautiful campus and historic buildings. Take a lunch and have a picnic to enjoy the surroundings of this Deep South building.

The sacred heart cultural center was originally the sacred heart catholic church. This beautiful brick building was built in 1900.

The exterior of sacred heart is of Romanesque design with carved arches, turrets, and ornate brick work. The interior of the church has impressive stained glass windows imported from Germany.

For those interested in architecture, the sacred heart cultural center is a must see site when in the city. It is open from 9:00AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday.

Next, you should check out Woodrow Wilson's childhood home. Wilson's father Joseph Ruggles Wilson moved to Augusta in 1858 to become the pastor of the first Presbyterian Church.

The Wilson family first lived on the 600 block of Greene street and moved into this house in 1860. Woodrow Wilson lived in the city during the civil war, and his parents helped wounded confederate soldiers.

In 1865, confederate president Jefferson Davis was captured by union troops in Irwinville, Georgia. Wilson watched Davis being led through the streets in chains which left a lifelong impression on him.

In 1870, Joseph Ruggles Wilson was hired as a professor at the Columbia theological seminary and the Wilson family moved to Columbia, South Carolina. This home is listed on the national register of historic places.

Located next to the Woodrow Wilson boyhood home is the Joseph Lamar house. This Italianate style house was built in 1860 by William h. Salisbury, who also built the Wilson home next door.


Joseph Lamar's father James Sanford Lamar was the pastor of the first Christian church of Augusta. Lamar became a lawyer and was appointed a United States supreme court justice by President William Taft in 1911.

Joseph Lamar and Woodrow Wilson were boyhood friends. The Lamar home is open to the public Monday through Friday 8:30AM to 5:00pm, and 10:00AM to 5:00PM on Saturdays.

As you can see, there is plenty to see and do in this historic city. So get out your history books, and watch it come alive as you walk through the beautiful streets of Georgia.
