Australian Businesses Are Failing The Online Test

A recent report from Australian based services provider MYOB has highlighted that

Australian based SMEs are still failing to embrace the online world sufficiently. The report showed that only 38% of SMEs had a website; this was a slight increase from the March figure of 36%.

So what gives Australian businesses? Normally a nation that embraces change and has been known to lead the way with new ideas and innovation, not wanting to be left behind why would just over a third of all Small Medium Enterprises not embrace the online world? Especially as getting online has never been easier. The resources available now to an online business are huge not only a whole government departments established on the digital needs of Australia, but web design firms, web marketing firms and online consultants are growing in prevalence in Australian streets making it cheaper, easier and quicker to get online than ever before.

And the time has never been better for Australian businesses to build a website; with overseas markets struggling and looking for new sources of revenue, they have increasingly looked to Australia to offer their services and products to a stronger than global average Australian economy. So as more SMEs in Australia delay their entry to the online world, they risk allowing overseas based services to take their place .This puts some concerns for the future Australian economy.

As less money is reinvested into the economy by Australian based business, there is less spending, less need for jobs and potentially a downward trend in overall economic outlook. As money for services goes overseas so to do jobs and money. Whilst we are not at those levels yet; it is important for local Australian businesses to understand that an online strategy is a vital component to their long-term growth and longevity. As the generations Y and Z and beyond become financially independent the way they engage business will change and if Australian businesses arent in the space offering the desired service the business will go else where.

The reasons for getting online might be obvious, but what is not obvious is what is holding Australian business back. The business who do have a website report higher levels of customer engagement, customer retention and importantly revenue and operate their business more effectively than those who do not have a website.

The barriers to entry online are significantly reduced. The costs for presence online have been dramatically reduced do to increased competition and really the time is now. Websites will attract new customers, help keep existing customers and increase cash flow; lets hope this statistic on Australian businesses with a website increases sharply in the near future.
