Awareness: The Key to Proper Self Defense

If you decide to enroll in any type of self defense course

, the first thing you will likely learn won't be a stunning move to take down an attacker. It will likely be a technique that you can use to avoid being attacked in the first place. In close combat training, the first things that are spoken of is how to become aware of your surroundings enough to ensure that you don't become a victim of violence.

The reasoning behind this is in fact quite simple. Attackers tend to prey on individuals who seem to be unaware of what is going on around them. They use the element of surprise to take you down and steal your purse or wallet. But if you eliminate the element of surprise, they likely won't even consider attacking you. There are thankfully a few ways that you can go about increasing your awareness, as Captain Chris lays out for the public in his series of self defense videos. First of all, keep your hands and mind free at all times. That means no texting or talking on the phone when you are out in public. If you have your head pointed at the ground looking at your cell phone, you leave yourself extremely vulnerable. Criminals know how to pick someone out who doesn't seem prepared and they will instantly jump on someone who is too busy texting to realize what is happening around them. If you must text, put yourself up against a wall so no one can come from behind. And also make sure to look up often.

If you become a student of close combat training, you will also learn how listening to music can be detrimental. Many of us like to listen to tunes while we are out on a jog or a walk, but it leaves us unaware of what is happening around us. A would-be criminal will pick up on this very quickly and realize that you are the perfect target. But if you must listen to music, ensure that it is only in one ear. This will at least leave you a bit less vulnerable to an attack. However, always be on guard and aware of possible attackers that might be lurking around.

Captain Chris knows that no one in their right mind actually wants to be attacked. That is why he first teaches you how to avoid an attack, and then teaches you what to do if it does in fact happen. Of course, simply being aware won't avoid every possible attack but it will certainly deter many criminals. But if you are one of the unlucky ones that do get attacked, close combat training will have your back. You will instantly know how to react to the attacker and how to take them down and have them begging for mercy. But no one wants that, so start today by practicing being more aware of your surroundings. You never know, but it could be the difference between life and death.
