Bait Debate For Crappie

The debate about the type of bait to use will always be on the minds of anglers

. Some will swear by live bait and some swear by artificial bait.

One thing to consider is what catches the most fish. The answer is simple, live bait is used more often than artificial bait to catch crappies. Although it takes time to catch your own bait, you can purchase bait for bait shops.

If you use live bait, you want to know what type of bait will work the best, how to keep the bait alive and how to rig the bait. Just remember one thing, keep the bait as natural as possible to catch crappies.

Live Bait

Catch your own baits. Minnow traps work well for catching the minnows, but you need to find the right place to place the trap. Some waters are so thick with minnows that one can place a net in the water and wait for the minnows to swim by and scoop some up.

However, this does take some time. With the minnow trap, you place it and go back the next day for the bait.

Keep in mind that the bait shop has already done the work for you and will have the live bait just waiting for you. This means that you will spend less time catching the bait and have more time for catching the fish.

Keeping the Bait Alive

To keep the bait alive, you will need a minnow bucket for transporting the fish. The bucket has a aerator that keeps the water circulating and oxygenated so that the minnows stay alive on the way to the fishing spot.

Most buckets will be able to keep the water warm, even on a cold day so that the fish keep swimming around. If you have some basic equipment at home, you can keep the minnows alive at home before transporting. Serious fishing, mean serious equipment to make the anglers life easier.

Crickets

If you can catch crickets or buy the crickets, these are good bait for crappie fishing. As you know, it is pretty hard to kill the crickets as long as you keep them in a container with grass and holes for air.

The nice thing about crickets is that you can use a bobber and a #10 hook to bait the crappies. Presenting the cricket is what you need to learn before using the insect. You want the cricket to move around a little in the water so that the crappies see the insect in distress.
