Bass Drum Technique

There are various bass drum techniques and the majority of drummers play more than one, depending on the dynamics and speed of the musical situation.

Heel down' technique is often used when a drummer has to play the bass drum at a soft, or piano, dynamic. Playing heel down only uses the muscles below the knee and most drummers would struggle to achieve lots of volume using this method and would also get tired quickly.

Other bass drum techniques use more leg muscles, such as, heel up' which will use the shin and the thigh muscles and therefore will give the drummer the ability to project the sound to very loud, or fortissimo.

Everyone is different and different bass drum techniques will work for some but not all so anyone playing drums should practice as many techniques as they can until they find which work best.

Another factor is speed, when a drummer has to play two bass drum notes very close together, maybe sixteenth note triplets or thirty second notes at a fast BPM.

Popular bass drum techniques to achieve this are Toe/Heel' or Foot/Leg' technique when this is used it will allow the bass drum beater to come away from the bass drum skin after each double stroke.

Playing Heel/Toe' or Leg/Foot' technique would achieve the same sound but would end with the bass drum beater touching the bass drum skin.

Another technique is Slide' technique where the drummer would start the first note half way up the pedal and, after playing the first note, would slide the foot nearer the top of the pedal to play the second note of the double stroke
