Battle-tested Reality-based Self-defense Systems
There are a few myths about Reality-Based Self-Defense (RBSD) systems today that I would like to debunk.
First, there is the notion that you have to be some sort of special ops ninja military assassin to offer anything of value to the hand-to-hand combat world. BS. If a technique works, then I don't care if it comes from my next door neighbour's 6 year-old niece. The military pedigree certainly makes someone sound more impressive, but ultimately, that doesn't make them better at self-defense.
Second, the saying that "our system is battle-tested". This is particularly present in Krav Maga. Now, I think Krav Maga is great, really I do. And in fact, the Hybrid Fighting Method is built on a foundation of Krav Maga. But when you examine the "battle-tested" claim, you are left with some questions. Number one, is every techniques battle-tested? No.
For example, Krav Maga teaches spinning heel kicks, rear naked chokes, spinning crescent (slap) kicks and so on. Have these techniques EVER been used in battle??? And even if they have, enough to qualify them as "battle-tested"? Yeah, I don't think so. But battle-tested sure sounds cool.
In HFM, every single one of our techniques has been tested against fully non-compliant attackers in training. Some of our techniques have even been proven in street violence.
Third, there is the catch phrase today in RBSD that everything is "constantly evolving". The Hybrid Fighting Method even says this, but I want to make something clear. If a new technique or training method is found, and if BETTER than the existing one - then it should be included.
Evolving for evolution's sake will lead to a watered down and ineffective RBSD system. The whole reason behind evolution is survival. So if there is a technique out there that leads to a better chance of survival in an attack - I will incorporate it into HFM to make it a better system.
Currently, I think HFM is the best. It's certainly the best I can offer. Then again, I can only offer you what I know...based on my experience. HFM is most definitely better than Krav Maga, BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing, or MMA - when it comes to defending yourself in real life.
Then again, that's MY opinion. I am biased, having created the system. I even created some completely original techniques for some pretty precarious situations. Everyone is welcome to come train in HFM and judge for themselves.
