Beach House Decorating On A Budget
Decorating a beach house can be expensive
Decorating a beach house can be expensive. But, if you know a few little tricks, you can decorate any room in the house without breaking the bank! Most people actually waste money when decorating a room by not buying furniture and decor items that co-ordinate the room.
The best way to save money as time goes on is to have a neutral base of colours. Neutral means colours in white, tan, or black. If you've just started decorating beach style the first thing you need to do is co-ordinate your furniture. To save money, you can do this by painting or staining your wood furniture the same colour so it looks stylish.
A large tin of paint will cost you between $20-30 at a local hardware store. As you find new pieces of furniture to add to your room, pull out your tin of paint and co-ordinate your look. If you want a cool, casual beach look, paint your furniture white or give it a whitewashed look. If you want a more modern look, try painting your furniture a rich gloss black. Are you aiming for the tropical look of the islands? Then stain all the furniture a nice deep chocolate timber colour.
By creating a neutral canvas of colour in your furniture, the room is now ready for colour and pattern linked accessories such as scatter cushions, art, rug, candles or floral arrangements.
Having a neutral base can also help if you change your mind about what colours and styles you like as time goes on. It is a lot easier to change a few scatter cushions than to buy a new couch.
Here are my 10 Tips for Beach Theme Decorating on a Budget
1. Use what you have- don't waste money buying new furniture. Coordinate the look of what you have already by painting the wood pieces a uniform color like white or black (if you want a more contemporary look.)
2. Look for free "stuff." You'll find free stuff everywhere once you start looking... check out the side of the road for tables, chairs and couches people are throwing out... Keep your ears open for friends and family who want to give stuff away. Once you get the "free stuff" then do a make over and make it fresh and new!
3. Your best investment is a big tin of white paint (or black depending on your style).
4. Start shopping at dollar stores and discount stores for basics like twigs, white pillar candles, pebbles, white hand towels, baskets, glass vases and hand made soaps.
5. Make your own art.
6. Stick to a neural color scheme for your big pieces of furniture... makes it easy to look good and easy to change accessory colors without costing a lot of money later.
7. Create one room at a time.
8. Visit 2nd hand stores and local markets to get old and creative objects. Use old signs for art.
9. Group objects together on one shelf to make a statement and design impact.
10. Decorate with shells you find at the beach.
