Who should do Yoga: Yoga, being a holistic practice, can be done by person of any age, however completely barring infants and kids below 5 years of age. Duration of a normal yoga session can vary from 1 hr to 1 hr 15 mins. Each session ideally should contain all these five phases:
Vyayam to open up the body joints and make the body ready for the practice
Asanas the exercises to flex muscles and improve elasticity of the body, strengthen to internal organs
Pranayam steady breaths to improve breathing, respiration quality
Mudras neuro muscular locks which help to improve the functioning of muscles and nerves
Meditation and relaxation to thoroughly relax the body and mind
It is necessary that a yoga session must be done empty stomach. The best time suited for the practice is early morning, after cleaning bowels. The next good time is evening, but you should make sure that there is a definite time gap between the meal taken and yoga session. Ifyou have taken a light meal in lunch, then u should practice yoga after 2 hours, if heavy meal has been taken , then a gap of four hours and if liquids are taken, then a gap of half hour should be there
The place where you practice yoga plays a significant role in reaping total benefits of the practice. The place should be aerated and clean. Yoga, if done in open garden and early morning, gives the maximum benefit as the body gets fresh air to breathe.
Yoga can be applied as therapy too. So even if you are suffering from chronic diseases then also you can practice yoga and pranayam. But the instructor should be an expert and should know about the complications and what practices will suit you best. Thus make sure that yoga is done under supervision of an expert instructor. There are plenty of yoga practices that can be customized according to your needs but still if you are not able to go through the entire session, you can always do meditation and pranayam, which will calm and relax your body, leaving a soothing effect.
Clothing should be very comfortable. It shouldn't be too loose and neither too tight, wear clothes that don't become a hindrance in easy movement of the body. Nowadays rubber yoga mats are hugely in fashion. But they aren't recommended as they artificially provide extra grip to the yoga practitioner. Yoga helps your body to develop balance, and the extra grip provided by rubber mats kill the motive. Thus jute hard mats are advised.
Yoga must always be done under expert guidance. As yoga asanas vary with the body type, so only a well qualified instructor would be able to customize the practices as per your body's requirement.
What kind of Yoga should I do? Numerous contemporary forms of yoga are available in themarket today, namely, power yoga, vinyasa yoga, hot yoga. Vinyasa yoga is a higher level of yoga which builds more balance and flexibility in body. However others include lots of additional jazz and oppose very essence of yoga.
