Beginner's Tips For Taking Pictures In The Evening

It takes more than just clicking a camera and aiming the lens at the subject if you wish to be a good photographer

. It takes quite a lot to be adept at this craft. Building the right skills often need lessons and instinct. We strongly recommend that amateur photographers take the right lessons and practice accordingly in order to be well versed in photography basics.

Due to the fact that it is done in a dark setting, with a lot of shadows to possibly obscure your view, night photography is quite a challenge for any photographer, particularly amateur photographers. Below are some tips that any amateur photographer can use to master night photography.

Shoot Safely

The shooting process would always start with the photographer looking for the best possible location to start shooting. Remember that if you are going to do the shoot, you will have valuable equipment with you. Many locations, particularly inner city locations can be very dangerous in the evening. Never underestimate your safety and that of your equipment. If possible, do your explorations with one or two people as you cannot very well conduct your shoot in daylight or under artificial lights.

Extra Batteries

Before leaving for your shoot, make sure that your batteries are charged, or better yet, buy a spare set of batteries if you don't have one - battery lifespan can shorten drastically in cold weather. A camera case is another thing you could consider bringing with you, as it can prevent moisture from entering inside the camera and damaging it.

Additional Equipment To Bring

A single lens reflex, or SLR camera, is perfect for night time use due to its manual exposure settings. Automatic cameras are not often recommended, as they are not powerful enough to fight the darkness. Another requirement is a sturdy tripod with a rubber leg to minimize slippage. A cable release is also needed as this will enable you to hold the shutter speed open.

Exposures In Night Photography

One important thing that an amateur must remember in conducting night photography is the fact that longer exposures are needed for black and white photos compared to ordinary lighting. Color film, on the other hand, will produce shifts in colors.

Painting With Light

"Painting with light" is a technique used by many photographers, by using hand-held flashes to supplement the moon's often meager light giving for photography. The more experienced photographers would use movie lights, or even torches to add to the moonlight.
