Being a big fish in a small pond helps!!!
Which is better Being a small fish in big pond or to be a big fish in small pond?
Ever since I started working, most of the time I looked for a change in my job, I got offers from smaller companies and unknown companies to join them. But I chose to work with bigger companies during my initial days of struggle as I thought that having a bigger company's name in my resume counts. But later on because of some or the other reasons I took breaks in my career and relocated from one place to another. As a result I stopped getting offers from all these big companies. I now work for a smaller company.
Many of my friend's work for bigger companies. These friends, who were less qualified than I am, get good salary packages than I do. They keep on exaggerating about their jobs. All I can say is that they make me feel jealous and envy them
Having exposure to both situations can help us analyse what is better Being a small fish in a big pond or being a big fish in a small pond is how I say it. In bigger companies you get all the facilities, benefits and money u want, but you are still stressed. Stressed about reaching on time, meeting the timelines, about achieving targets failing which you can be asked to leave the company anytime but I do agree that all this brings some discipline in the manner we work. In smaller companies it may bother you for once that you work for a company not known by many and you might have to explain it to about the company, its business and its goodwill in the market every time they ask about your company with raised eyebrows (just to make sure they feel how big you are in your professional life) but you have relief from the above mentioned stressful problems.
Till you work for a bigger company, you are unaware of the extent of your own capacity to create, innovate & grow in your interested field. The smaller companies give you a chance to show your talent and capability, which you are unaware of, and help the organisation to grow with your efforts. In bigger companies only bigger position people get this chance while the people at junior position are made to work as directed by their superiors (still exceptions are there). Not all of them take this situation as a learning experience and tend to look for a change where they can avoid this situation of being directed for even the smallest of the work.
In smaller companies all you get is recognition for even the smallest of the work you do and respect from your seniors and juniors both. I feel that is what a person needs when he works anywhere Recognition. In bigger companies too you get recognition but how many people appreciate it and know you for the same is the question. I am aware of the fact that every person works for money but they need recognition too. Money alone can not decide the loyalty of any employee towards its company but recognition of his efforts by the company can.
Both situations have its own pros and cons and when dealt in right way can allow you to stick to any organisation for long. Gaining experience and learning from smaller companies and then moving to bigger ones can be the right way to grow in your career because you have tried and analysed your efforts in smaller companies (they give you chance to try and fail) and know the correct methods & solutions which you can use in bigger companies (where you can never take the chance of trying and failing otherwise you are shown your way to home).
In order to have freedom to express and grow in the way you want yourself to, choose to be in a smaller pond and see how big you can grow. Once you become too big for this small pond to accommodate you, you can move to a bigger pond. This way you can do justice to both, yourself and the organisation you work for.
