Basel is the third largest city in Switzerland, which stands on the banks of the Rhine on the borders of Switzerland, Germany and France. Although an industrial city, Basel is also culturally very important. Its 30 museums, its university, and its pronounced taste for contemporary art make it a dynamic city. Some of the popular tourist attractions in Basel are:

1. Basel Muenster:

The Muenster is Basel's biggest church, which is Romanesque and Gothic style cathedral, built during 1019-1500. On one side of the main gate, you see the holy Martin sharing his clothes. On the other side is Georg the Dragon slayer. The gate on the side of the building has the wheel of fortune over it. The twenty meters terrace also offers an excellent view of the Rhine River and Germany's Black Forest.

2. Zoological Garden:

The Basel's zoological garden was established in 1874 and is one of the greatest and world-known for breeding endangered species. Occupying an area of eleven hectares, this zoo has some 4500 animals of around six hundred different species. One can enjoy a show of trained elephants and sea lions performing various tricks. The Vivarium is also very rich - filled with everything from penguins to reptiles. It is the most popular paid attraction in Basel.

3. Foundation Beyeler:

It is an important collection of 19th century artworks, founded by Ernest and Hildy Beyeler. Until present days, they had collected one of the greatest private art-collections in the country. This impressive collection includes works by van Gogh, Kandinsky, Andy Warhol, Max Ernst, Edgar Degas, Alexander Calder, Mark Rothko, Georges Seurat, Georges Braque and Jackson Pollock amongst many others. All these artists works are exceptional, especially Picasso's 1944 "Woman in Green".

4. St. Jakob Arena:

The St. Jakob Arena is a huge ice stadium situated on the south-easterly outskirts of Basel. It is used for many of the city's biggest sporting events, particularly ice hockey matches as it is the home ground of a prominent Swiss ice hockey team. Built in 2002 and featuring a capacity of just over 6,300 people, it also hosts a series of large rock concerts and is well connected to the region's public transport network.
