Beyond The Sea - Diving In The Red Sea

The Red Sea lies between Africa and Asia and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world

. The name derives from the sometimes red colour of the water caused by a phenomenon with a form of algae which is found within the sea. When the algae blooms die, the usually blue water turns to a rusty red colour. Due to the natural biodiversity of the Red Sea, it is often called a natural wonder. Constant warm water temperatures create the perfect environment for coral growth and means that the sea is rich in concentration of marine life.

What lies beneath the Red Sea would definitely be classed as one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Rich in colourful sea life that would not look out of place in a Disney movie, the Red Sea is famous for the thousands of species that lay hidden beneath the water. Turtles and manta rays roam freely through the sea, whilst devil rays cruise over the stunning coral reef. Several different species of shark patrol the waters whilst schools of tropical fish filter in between.

It's no wonder that the Red Sea is one of world's most popular diving locations with visitors coming from all round the world to view the spectacular sea life. There are several diving schools that are catered for everyone from the most experienced diver to a nervous beginner. Inexperienced divers can take advantage of the easy, house reefs that allow beginners to learn at their own pace under the watchful eye of an experienced diver. Even these beginners reefs play home to several species of sea life from Spanish mackerel to puffer fish, these species serve as a warm up to the larger creature's divers are faced with as a diving course progresses!

Although the fantastic sea life is a major attraction with Red Sea diving, many people go there to explore the underwater wrecks found lying beneath the water. Sailing from the popular Port Sudan, several of the best dive spots are just minutes away. One of the most famous wrecks is the 'Umbria', a large passenger and cargo ship that is perfectly preserved beneath the waves. The 'Blue Bell' is another favourite with dive fans as it holds a fleet of preserved Japanese cars! It is no surprise that these spots are legendary among both divers and underwater photographers.

Those tempted by a holiday to the Red Sea are seemingly spoilt for choice with the beauty of the underwater scene mirrored on dry land. Many of the nearby hotels have private beaches, golf course, nightclubs and even casinos. With some resorts as lit up as Las Vegas, it is sometimes easy to forget that the ancient pyramids are just 200 miles away! The most popular resort is the tourist haven, Sharm El-Sheikh, an all year round resort which is extremely hot during the summer months. Those wanting a quieter experience on dry land can venture to the many national parks, mountains and valleys that hold nearly as much wildlife as their underwater neighbours!

The Red Sea is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with luxury meeting surprising affordability! On the basis of the spectacular diving sites alone, this 'natural wonder' is definitely one to recommend.
