1. The current events Smart people are always aware of what's happening in the world. Using the current events as a topic is such a good way to go. Try reading the newspaper or even read online news just so you have information on what is happening around you and around the world. Who knows? Your effort might pay off by bagging a second date, right? That is a news that you will certainly love to hear.

2. Books, movies and music If you love these, then you will never have to worry on things to talk about. You can always start by asking on what kind of books she likes to read, movies she likes to watch or music that she would like to listen too. It might sound boring but you can make this big by giving smart and honest comments on her answers. With that, she will definitely defend her views and it will be a really fun conversation.

3. Anything that you are passionate about If you're talking passionately to a person, that person can feel it. Anything that the two of you will passionately talk about will be very interesting. You can make the small talk smooth and without tension if you are already familiar and passionate on whatever you are both discussing. You can talk about your job, about your pet or about your frustrations. With your enthusiasm, you can make it such a big topic to talk about.

4. Politics Some people love talking about politics. It is always a good small talk starter if you're date seems to be interested in this kind of topic. Ask her about her political beliefs and I am sure that it will become an intense conversation. Especially, if both of you have different sides to represent. Just be sure to end it in a happy note since this is just all for fun and nothing too serious. You don't want to loose your chance for another date just because you called her unpatriotic.

5. Talk about her - So if it's your first meeting and you technically don't know her, then you can focus on knowing her. You can ask her open ended questions about her work or simply things about her so you can actually get more defined answers. And by doing this, you can also get to know her better. Make her explain things about her views and listen to her. You can exchange views about things that she likes and she will definitely adore you.

Small talk doesn't always mean that you have to use small topics. Big topics ca also be used for small talks you just have to choose intelligently. Even if you can give the best topics possible, but your date doesn't understand aninch of what you are talking about, then everything will still be useless.
