Bioluminescence: The Natural Way of Lighting
Bioluminescence: The Natural Way of Lighting
Generally, all organisms use sense of sight to see things. It is indeed very tough to go around without light. They also use many other methods to get information. But some living creatures produce their own light from the body to see the surroundings. This is called bioluminescent.
Different types of animals that glow, create light with the help of chemical compounds that are present in their system and they mix together to glow. It's more or less like the tube light because the substances inside the animals act together to make light, but unlike the tube light, bioluminescence does not produce heat; hence, it is called cold light.
Scientists and researchers spend time studying about how animals produce light from their body. They found out that the chemical substance varies from animal to animal. In many species, the researches could not figure out why such adaptations happen and how they control this radiance. This subject is very difficult to learn because the light producing animals lose their glow once they are caught. This is because the process of capturing damages the light-producing organs in them.
We'll see some basic process of luminescence and how animals depend on their advantage. It is a process or an act of an organism to emit light. Major portions of organisms that produce light lives in the sea, but of course, there are many insects and plants which produce bioluminescence like firefly. This adaptation is mainly to attract their prey or partner.
How Does It Work?
Light is produced by the revolution of electrons around the atom's nucleus. When they gain enough energy, they go to a higher orbit and then again come back to the lower shell; the energy produced by this process release as light. In bioluminescent organisms, the electrons get its high energy level through a chemical reaction where no energy is lost as heat. The chemicals which cause this electron transfer to a higher level are substrate, luciferin and enzyme.
Why Do Organisms Produce Light?
There are many reasons for this. Fish has this ability to lure its mates or to fear away its enemies and to find food. Some deep water fish have light below their eyes that helps find the way and acts as search light. Some types of shrimps have this ability as a defense mechanism. They spit out a bioluminescent clutter when some predator attacks them. This clutter attracts the enemy during when the shrimp escapes from the enemy. In some creatures, this light helps disguise the creature in the sea by letting it blend together.
