Bird's Eye Views On Board the Wheel of Manchester
They say you haven't discovered Manchester until you have looked upon it from the city's own version of the London Eye better known as the Wheel of Manchester. Having stood at the edge of Champs Elysees for the past three years the 42-capsule wheel now occupies pride of place opposite the Triangle shopping centre, right next to Selfridges in Manchester's own Exchange Square. Renowned for offering the most spectacular views of the city that is home to perhaps the most famous football club in the world, the Wheel experience is one that is treasured by locals and visitors alike. As an ever changing and evolving cityscape, the urban landscapes and skyline of Manchester can best be experienced on board the Wheel which takes guests on a brief but informative ride complete with the most panoramic views of the city.
As one of the globe's largest movable wheels, the transportable structure arrived in Manchester in 24 containers. Nearly two weeks were spent reassembling the Wheel in its current location on Exchange Square which won the bid to house the iconic structure beating Piccadilly Gardens. Lasting a little over 10 minutes the ride on board the wheel offers guests stunning views of the Manchester Town Hall, Old Trafford, Peak district hills, Urbis, No.1 Deansgate and the CIS Tower among several other famed landmarks. Commentary with quirky facts about the points of interest are also played during the ride to offer guests a better understanding of the significance of what lies before them.
Originally built in Holland at a cost of five million euros, the 60 metre high observation wheel weighs a whopping 300 tonnes in all. Suspended in its space by nearly 9000 gallons of water the structure also boasts 21 spokes while 51,000 light bulbs are used to illuminate its circular shape at dusk. Each capsule can accommodate up to eight persons while disabled access as well as heating and air conditioning are also available for added comfort.
Those who don't mind the extra fee can also opt to ride the Wheel's VIP capsule which was constructed especially for then French president Jacques Chirac. With champagne on ice, DVD player and a telephone among its creature comforts, the glass floored, walnut interior VIP gondola also contains a cocktail cabinet and luxurious leather seats.
