Boldon Business Park In The Heart Of East Boldon
East Boldon, along with West Boldon and Boldon Colliery
, form a small group of Teeside villages in the north east of England. This historic community is situated between Sunderland, South Shields and Jarrow. The population of East Boldon combined with its sister parishes stands at just over 13,000.
East Boldon takes its name from the River Don and the hill, or 'bol' in Anglo Saxon, which stands above it. Located just off the A19, East Boldon is a mere 20-minute car journey to the flourishing nearby city of Newcastle.
As with many settlements in this corner of the country, the community sprung up around the industrial revolution. Boldon Colliery developed at the foot of the hill and with it came the housing and lives of the men who worked in the coal mine. The mine closed in 1982 but the area has benefited from subsequent regeneration and commercial redevelopment opportunities.
East Boldon in the 21st century now operates around Boldon Business Park as well as large chain brands such as Asda and Cineworld. Combined with the feeling of local community, East Boldon is also near a playgroup, a nursery, a choice of primary schools, a junior school in West Boldon and Boldon School, which is a specialist sports college.
This privately funded secondary school opened in 2006 and is a major draw for families in the area. Some of the amenities available to students include a four-lane 25-metre swimming pool, a fully equipped gymnasium and five-a-side football pitches. The school also has top-of-the-range arts facilities including its own theatre.
The transport links in East Boldon are wide and varied, with fast access to national routes, regular buses and the nearby Brockley Whins railway station serving the route between Newcastle and Sunderland. It is within walking distance of several large business and retail parks, as well as the local hospital.
There are a number of options to eat out or procure a cheeky takeaway on those nights when cooking just seems too much, ranging from the local fish and chip shop to independent curry houses. There are a whole host of pubs in the periphery of East Boldon as well.
The varieties of housing styles in East Boldon are testament to its historical lineage. Set around the designated conservation area at the heart of the village, it is possible to find a whole host of architectural styles including rows of Victorian terraces as well as sprawling Edwardian villas. For more contemporary homeowners, there are also examples of post-war accommodation and more modern housing developments from the late 20th century on the edge of the village.
Since the decline of traditional industries such as mining, which were integral to the area, Boldon has seized the opportunity to redevelop in line with modern needs. Whilst undergoing vast regeneration, East Boldon has managed to retain its historic core and ensure that it still has its traditional appeal and authentic character. There is no better proof of this than in the fact that the Boldons History Society, which is dedicated to local heritage and ancestry, continues to meet weekly.
