Bowhunting Equipment

Archery as a hunting technique has long been practiced by different groups of people all around the world. Before it had fallen out of favor during the 14th century, archery remains the primary method to kill game animals. Even with the rise of rifles and hunting guns, bowhunting has survived through the generations of marksmen and tribal hunters. This kind of hunting practice uses special bowhunting equipment instead of bullet-ridden barrels.

Shooting game animals with bowhunting equipment is different to using hunting rifles when it comes to the range distance. The range for shooting arrows on game animals is relatively shorter than that of the riflehunting. A very close proximity to the prey is generally recommended in bowhunting. Stalking and hiding are thus commonly being practiced here in order to get a good aim at the animals. Bowhunting is generally intended for large game animals such as elk and deer.

The main bowhunting equipment that is used for killing game animals is the compound bow. It has a levering system that provides the hunter with better accuracy and velocity as compared to any other kinds of bows. With this special mechanism, the hunter is allowed to fix his aim on the animals without the hassles of holding the bowstring at full draw. Usually, the draw weights for compound bows are set between 60 to 70 pounds, which is just right for hunting large animals. Most compound bows today also have sights mounted on them to aid the hunters in locating the target points.

Another tool that is specially used in bowhunting are broadhead arrows. Unlike with the other forms of arrowheads, the broadhead variety has blades that are sharp enough to bleed the prey. The purpose of its use is to cut the animal with a good arrow shot that will create a better blood trail. Broadhead arrows are extensively used in bowhunting and are not applicable for target archery or even practices.

There are several other equipments that can be carried around for bowhunting to maximize results. Among them are the quiver, release, gloves and binoculars. A quiver is a special case used for containing arrows while hunting. It needs to be lightweight in order to make it handy enough to be attached on the bow; although some hunters prefer to sling it around their waist or back. As for the release, it should be highly efficient to ensure an increase in accuracy. Gloves are just as indispensable as the bow and arrows. When you are going to hunt for a longer period of time, it is only advisable to use gloves for protection. Binoculars are carried along by hunters to help them locate potential victims.

Before you had the chance to hunt in the wild using bowhunting equipment, it is best if you practice a lot with block or 3D targets firsts. Practice shooting with a set of target points or field tips arrows. Never use broadhead arrows unless you want a complete damage to the targets. Shooting at a range of at least 40 feet can give you good chances in downing a large game animal during the hunting season.
