Breast Reconstruction At-a-glance
Breast reconstruction is a wonderful option for women who have lost one or both breasts in a mastectomy after breast cancer
. Breast reconstruction will restore the fullness and shape to their bust line and create curves that are aesthetically pleasing.
Breast reconstruction is not a simple procedure. It requires several months to achieve the look that the patient desires. There are a few options that the plastic surgeon may suggest to a breast reconstruction patient.
The first option is to use a breast implant or set of breast implants to create a shapely bust line. Depending on the plastic surgeon, he or she may elect to use saline or silicone breast implants. The surgeon will discuss with you the size and shape that you desire. If you have lost only one breast, the surgeon may place one implant to match the shape of your second, existing breast. If you are unhappy with the size of your existing breast, you may have a second implant placed to enhance its size. If you have lost both breasts, you will have two implants placed to replace them.
The second option that a plastic surgeon may consider is to use tissue from the patients own body for their breast reconstruction. The surgeon may take fat, muscle, and skin from the patients abdomen, buttocks, or back and form it into the shape of a breast. Once placed, the patient will undoubtedly love the results.
Another consideration that breast reconstruction patients face is when to have their reconstructive surgery. Some patients may want the surgery to immediately follow their mastectomy, while they are still under anesthesia. This ensures that most of the breast skin is preserved, and can also keep the scar from the surgery fairly small.
Or, the patient may elect to have a delayed reconstruction procedure. In this circumstance, the reconstructive surgery will take place several months after the mastectomy. This is a good option for patients who need to undergo radiation after their mastectomy as part of their cancer treatment, because it allows the breast tissues to heal from the radiation.
