Not all fats are created equal. You may think that in order to lose weight, you will need to avoid fats at all cost. You need to realize that you need an adequate supply of healthy dietary fats vital to your overall health. However, what you need to cut down will be heavily processed, man-made fats. We shall take a closer look at what are the bad fats to eschew.
There are basically3 types of fats and they are:-
Saturated fats: Mostly animal fats and from animal products. Over consumption of saturated fats will lead to high cholesterol (increase of bad cholesterol, LDL in your body) which will up your chances of getting clogged arteries and heart attack.
Unsaturated fats (Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated): They are found mostly in fish, seeds and nuts. E.g. of food that contain unsaturated fats will include avocados, olive, salmon, soybean and canola. Some studies have shown that monounsaturated fats can lower bad cholesterol and maintain good cholesterol (HDL)
Trans-fats/hydrogenated fats: Trans fats are chemically altered vegetable oils. They are produced artificially in a process called hydrogenation which turns liquid oil into solid fat. It is used mainly to extend the shelf live of food. You can easily find trans fats in processed foods, fried food,vegetable shortenings, cookies, processed foods with partially hydrogenated oil. Studies have shown that eating too much food containing trans fats not only lead to obesity but heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more.
The next time you load your shopping cart with groceries at the supermarket, remember to train your eyes to look out for the nutrition or food label. Be sure not to stock up on food especially processed food or snacks that are high in trans fats as you will be doing your health great harm!
