Businesses Retreat With Sdn
Software defined networking or SDN is a recently introduced networking technology
that is considered as one of the most successfully emerging and disruptive technologies. Earlier networking models were built using various networking nodes like hubs, switches and routers. These were generally more hardware dependent and became exceedingly complex with the expansion of network. A very little amount of user customization was allowed on such networks which inhibited them to customize the services they desired.
SDN, on the other hand, separates the hardware dependency of the user on the network and allows them to customize the network service. This opens up the control of data and other services flow over the network, improving the operation and performance of the network. Using SDNs in a business environment brings various advantages for it in different dimensions:
Network Planning: A better vision on various inter-related entities like network resources, computing resource or storage resources can be visualized. This helps businesses to manage and effectively utilize various components for a highly productive network service.
Improved network availability: Since a network is configured using a software, very little chances of configuration error remains. This eliminates the chances of network crashes due to faulty configuration values and hence provides high uptime to the user.
Flexibility: Businesses can leverage the advantage of re-writing the code for the service according to their own requirement. This allows them to decide the level of accessibility of the network and network services to operate upon them.
Cost effective: Different types of costs, related to operations and
infrastructure services can be lowered down by using SDN services. Since it separates the routing/switching intelligence for packet forwarding, services can be customized according to application and eventually cost of maintenance and installation can be reduced with SDN.
Its not only the advantages of deploying a SDN that strengthens the ground of approval for this technology but a few fall backs in conventional networking, also support the same. Different problems arose with the expansion of network for businesses which were difficult to maintain. The security features in existing networks, their robustness etc. didn't evolve and address according to the requirements of the business.
The capital cost of infrastructure and the operational costs are increasing rapidly, which put an unnecessary burden on the organization and with the introduction of new services is not frequent enough in order to serve the users. These factors contributed in the selection of a technology which could evolve with the time and requirements and at the same time be equally economic. SDN, with all of its advantages, solves these problem and so is gaining popularity in the infrastructure requirements of businesses.
