California Continuing Legal Education Requirements You Should Know
Minimum Continuing Legal Education requirements for California refers to the approved
continuing legal education that is required of all practicing attorneys in the state, regardless of how long they have been practicing. Every attorney in the state, including those who are Exempt, are required to turn in a compliance card to the State Bar to verify that they have complied with their state requirements. In fact, as of December 1 of 2008, attorneys can report their compliance online in lieu of using a paper compliance card, which is much more convenient for professionals. Much information can be found on the State Bar s home page, including how exactly to submit an electronic attestation of compliance.
To make sure that attorneys receive high quality education and training in the legal field, the State Bar must approve MCLE providers and education activities to have them attest to the quality information that they provide to attorneys. Attorney membership in the state is divided into three different compliance groups. The first group have last names beginning with A G, and the next compliance deadline for California continuing legal education is February 1, 2010. The next group is made up of members that have last names that begin with H M. This is the group that should have already done their required work, and they had a compliance deadline of February 2 of 2009. Group 3 members are those that have last names that begin with N Z, and they have the compliance deadline of February 1, 2011. The compliance periods for the three groups are staggered so that each group reports in a different year, and the compliance periods are 3 years in length.
Just before the end of each group s compliance period, the Bar sends cards to those who have to comply so that they are aware of their requirements. The total number of hours required every three years is 25, and the maximum allowed self study hours are 12.5. Members have to fulfill at least one half of their MCLE requirement with activities that are approved for Participatory credit. There are some special requirements that are required within the total required hours, and these can be taken as participatory or self study hours. 4 hours are required in Legal Ethics, 1 hour is required in Detection/prevention of Substance Abuse, and there is one hour that is required in Elimination of the Bias in the Legal Profession as well. There are many other requirements that attorneys are required to follow, so be sure that you are aware of California continuing legal education requirements.
