Can Liposuction Enhance My Buttocks?

When most people think of liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy)

, they think of reducing the size of something. For the most part, they would be right. Lipoplasty is a surgical technique for removing fat from the body. However, recent advances in technology are making it more and more possible for the fat removed during surgery to be recycled and moved to another area of the body.

One of the biggest areas of interest for this sort of fat transfer is the buttocks. Some women (and men) prize a large, round, voluptuous derrierre. Stars such as J-lo and Beyonce have showed the world that it can be sexy to have a curvaceous tuckus, and now more and more women are trying to achieve the same "booty-licious" look.

The idea of transfering fat from one part of the body to another is by no means new. The first recorded attempt came during the 19th century. However, for the most part, these attempts have not had ideal results. A large amount of the fat can be killed during the removal process, and even more can die after being replaced back into the body. This fat death led to uneven results, hardened lumps in the target area, and additional complications. This prompted a number of health organizations and plastic surgery associations to give strong warnings against fat grafting.

However, newer techniques may be making it more possible to achieve a larger, shapelier rump without the complications of previous techniques. New methods of liposuction fat harvesting do a better job of keeping the fat alive. For example, the water jet method and the custom acoustic method can remove fat more gently, which gives it a much higher survival rate. With some of the newest techniques, as much as 90% of the fat can be kept alive.

Even these new technique cannot remove the risk of fat dying after it has been injected back into the body. Fat cells, like all cells in our body, need nutrients and blood supply to live. Historically, when fat cells have been implanted into the body, they die because they do not have adequate blood flow.

Another recent advance helps to solve this problem by converting some of the fat cells into stem cells before they are re-injected back into the body. In theory, this should allow the newly inserted fat to develop a new blood supply and remove the problem of fat death.
