Can You Shop For A New Telecommunications Provider
People today have a choice of their telecommunications provider
. This refers to the company that provides phone service and is not necessarily the internet service provider, or ISP. There are some internet service providers that have bundle deals, as they are called, available.
This is a package deal that provides cable TV, internet service, and telephone service for a discounted price. But telecommunications refers for the most part to telephone service. But there was a time when people in this country did not have their choice of providers.
One company controlled most of the communication connections in the country. It was a monopoly, but the government allowed it. People usually had two choices when it came to phone service. The first choice was to have a phone. The second choice was not to have a phone.
The telephone company stifled competition even as technology grew. Some companies were able to offer low long distance rates. But they needed the cooperation of the major phone services in order to connect their systems.
The companies were allowed to refuse to work with the upstart companies because of government regulation. The regulations helped further the monopoly. But as technology grew, the regulations were seen as preventing the growth of the industry.
Government regulations on the industry at the time prevented outside communications companies from building the necessary components that made discount long distance calling possible. Believe it or not, people could not even buy a telephone that was not produced by the phone company. The telephone company warned that if regulations were lifted and competition allowed that telephone service would suffer and prices would go through the roof.
But some brave souls fought against the telephone monopoly and those who supported government regulations. Today, communication services are much more advanced and much less expensive. The competition that was allowed to flourish by eliminating government regulation has led to much advancement that probably would not have occurred if the industry was still regulated as it was before the early 1980's.
It is true that the communications industry is a billion dollar industry and many top executives have gotten wealthy from the need to be able to talk on the telephone. But many believe that deregulation of the market was a positive step. Today people even have the option to use Voip services.
Voip is voice over internet protocol. This technology allows people to talk for free using their internet connection. Who knows if this would have been developed if the regulations were not removed. So today people have a choice of their telecommunications provider, which many believe is a good way to run business.
