A challenge presented to all educators by me, Alicia Henry. Can you leave your egos at home and keep children at the "heart" of the education discussion?
I guess it is easier said than done.
Over the past several weeks we have heard from government officials and local school officials about the grim state of affairs in education. They claim their focus is the children and what is best for them. However, are we really coming to the table with an open mind on how to do things differently or are we still in the self-preservation mode. I dare to ask "What would happen if we left our egos at home and truly listened to one another?" But to do this, takes a leap of faith and trust. We have to be willing to learn from the success of other schools, teachers, and administrators whether they are private or public. And we have to be humbly ready to accept and admit that maybe we were wrong and there is a better way.
We are human, which means we are not perfect. When it comes to the education of our children, we need to have the ongoing discussion of what we are doing, why we are doing it, and can we prove that it works. It is time to put everything on the table. The education of our children is too important to waste time by letting our egos get in the way.
We must be willing to help each other become better teachers and administrators without feeling "singled out". We need to welcome constructive criticism without feeling "personally attacked". We need to wake up everyday and ask ourselves "What would happen if I left my ego at home today?" We need to be brave enough to have passionate discussions about education without fear.
Something has to change. I challenge all educators to embrace the challenges facing us today. Let's start thinking outside of the box. Let every idea be spoken. Then, let's dare to make the changes necessary so that our children stay at the "heart" of the discussion. Please, leaveyour egos at home. Do it for the children.
I do know this, when adults come together for the benefit of students children succeed.
