Canada Institutes New Visas For Indians
In consonance with the newly improved Indian-Canadian trade relationship
, the Canadian government has recently announced a new visa regime allowing Indians to a ten year multiple entry visa to the country.
This was announced by the Canadian Minister for International Trade Edward Fast. He announced the new visa regime in a meeting with representatives of the Indian government and business community during the Parvasi Bharatiya Divas Canada 2011 convention.
The visa would be available to Indians who have been traveling to the North American country with increased frequency. After an initial screening, Indian applicants can obtain a visa allowing them to visit Canada as often as they wish so long as their passports have a ten-year validity, according to Fast.
In response, Preneet Kaur, the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs said both India and Canada have committed to improve and further strengthen bilateral trade and commerce ties. She cited that the Indian communities in Canada is a microcosm of the non-resident Indian people living in other countries. These communities have been key to Indian growth as they send remittances back to the country, make investments, introduce Western standards of technology and skill and continue to popularize Indian culture overseas.
She said, "India and Canada will soon sign the Social Security Agreement, conclude a bilateral Investment Protection Agreement, negotiate a revised Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement and complete an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement." The goal is to achieve a bilateral trade amount of at least US$15 billion dollars in the next five years.
She further added, "India Canada ties are developing at a time of enormous opportunities in India. We need US$1 trillion in the infrastructure sector over the next decade and foreign investment and trade would continue to be an integral part of our growth."
In a larger scale, both countries are deep in discussion for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that would provide economic benefits for both countries and lower existing tariffs for importing and exporting goods to either country.
Kaur described the talks as "a free trade agreement from an Indian perspective aimed to promote market policies to open Canada for Indian products with the further goal of constructing a broader and deeper bilateral relationship."
The High Commissioner of India, SM Gavai said the new visa regime would be able to meet the high demand for visas to Canada coming from Indian businesses and families that would want to go to Canada with a higher frequency.
On Canada's part, David Johnston, the country's Governor General, said that by the year 2017, Indian immigrants to Canada would become one of the strongest groups in the country and would become instrumental in the success of the country.
