. Choosing a career and suitable job with the degree or experience you have can be tough. Graduates can have a tough time finding a job after university, depending on how they want to use their degree in the working world.

Indeed, the hardest thing about completing a psychology degree may be deciding what to do with it afterwards. There are many options open to graduates who complete a bachelors degree in any discipline of psychology. Only a small percentage of graduates go on to become chartered psychologists in the various areas of psychology: clinical, educational, forensic, occupational, health or sports psychology. Despite the competition, it is worth remembering that having a good psychology degree is sound preparation for a wide range of careers. The skills acquired during your degree might include communication, research and interpersonal skills. Psychology teaches an understanding of how people communicate, as well as teaching vital communication skills such as advanced reading, writing and presentation skills. This can be applied to jobs such as human resources, counselling, mentoring, coaching and writers. Psychology students spend a huge amount of time researching, analysing and presenting data in meaningful formats. All those long hours in the library reading psychology news, searching for psychology journals and psychology articles will pay off in jobs such as advertising, market research, retail and sales. Interpersonal skills consist of understanding the needs of others, interacting with others and group problem solving, are to name a few. Sales jobs, technicians, in particular psychiatric technicians who work with mental health patients are areas of potential career choice and development.

Other jobs you can do with a psychology degree include teaching, social services specialists, laboratory assistants, child care workers, and probation and parole officers. As you can see the job market is wide, some involve more training and qualifications than others. However, with an understanding of human behaviour, psychology graduates stand a good chance of securing employment upon completion of a psychology related degree.

If you complete a clinical psychology degree, or similar, it is likely that you have completed some form of work experience during your degree. This is good opportunity to make connections in the industry you are interested in. If your time during your work experience is successful, it increases your chances of finding permanent employment after your degree. Work placements are recommended for psychology students at university as employers look favourably upon those with some experience. A good base to start forming your career in psychology is to use your university careers advisory service. They can assist students seeking to start their careers in the relevant areas of the work sector.
