One of the most interesting sports that is also one of the least well-known in the world is the game of Trugo. Trugo was created by the worker in the railway repair shops in Newport during the 1920s.

The player who is throwing usually stands on a rubber mat that faces the opposite direction from the goals. The feet stand on either side of another wheel.

Then, the player throws the mallet between their legs towards the wheel. This form of throwing is called the tunneling style.

When four wheels have been hit by the first player, the second player will take a turn. Each contestant has 24 tries to hit the wheel.

12 of the tries are thrown from each end. The player with the most goals at the end wins.

The women's version of the game has been traditionally called GoTru. Another difference between the women's and men's game is that the women usually stand to one side to throw the mallet.


Today, there are several Trugo clubs. These clubs are located in Brunswick, Footscray, Port Melbourne, and Sandridge.

This sport has also been called "Tunneling the Wheel" or "Shooting the Ring." It is also traditionally winter sport as it is played outdoors.
