Chasing Fantasies With MLM Leads To Poverty

This is a call to action to anyone aspiring to be a leader with MLM. Far too often, people get started with MLM or a home business with the hope and vision of striking it rich. Building wealth in this industry is absolutely possible, however, having unrealistic expectations and chasing fantasies will lead to the destruction of your business, your dream, and can ultimately lead to poverty. The inspiration behind this article, is not to crush your hopes, but rather to teach you the common pitfalls to avoid, and to prepare you for building true long lasting success with MLM or your home based business.

To begin, we need a big dream and clear goals to strive for, something bigger than ourselves. As the Bible states, "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he." Proverbs 29:18. In order to succeed with MLM, it is an absolute must that you have a clear understanding of why you want to succeed, so that you won't be derailed by short term challenges. It is also of extreme importance that you have the proper mind set and expectations while building. Improper expectations is the #1 reason for failure in anything we do, whether it is business, personal goals, or even relationships and marriage.

Let's address what it means to chase a fantasy. I remember hearing of a poll that was taken in the US, and that an astounding 25% of our population's plan for wealth was winning the lottery. Unfortunately, so many people get started with MLM, with that same lottery winning mentality. It is the idea or thought that they can work their business very little and reap a huge return. The truth is, there is no chance you can create massive success without working for it. Here are a few MLM fantasies you need to avoid.

You see, the compensation plans for most companies instruct you to help 2 or 3 people get started, and help them build their business, but most new business owners don't realize they are referencing leaders, not just warm bodies. It may take you sponsoring 10-20 people before you find your first 2 or 3 serious business builders. You must consider the numbers, because your team will need to do the same thing, sponsor multiple people to find a few solid leaders. So please do the math, and realize before the money can begin to flow, the foundation needs to be built. You cannot generate wealth by recruiting a handful of people.

If you are working with a traditional MLM, it can take 3-5 years to develop your dream team and earn a sustainable income. Another MLM fantasy is this idea of being able to recruit one or two "on fire" leaders who create massive volume, so you can stop recruiting. Reality is, with MLM, superstars can come and go, so you need to prepare for the replacement of such leaders when that happens. Nobody is above this type of challenge, so unless you want to bear the fruit of ignorance, prepare for it; leaders learn how to control the variables.

Another false expectation is that everyone will want or need your product. Not all of your possible customers will feel the same way you do about your product or service, regardless of how wonderful it is; generating sales requires planning, and persistent action. Please understand you will probably hear the answer no several times before you hear yes. When you understand this, it allows you to plan properly, to ensure you have a marketing strategy in place based on real conversion rates with MLM.

The thought that people are waiting to hear from you, is yet another MLM fantasy. The truth is, having enough people or leads for your business is the number one problem people face with MLM. I hope you are seeing a common theme here, if you prepare for lead shortage by implementing proven marketing methods, you can ensure you don't run out of people to contact. Furthermore, you will want multiple advertising methods to work with, so you always have a fresh supply of prospects. If you made your living fishing, most likely you wouldn't put your nets in only one place, because eventually that source will dry up and fish would become scarce.

The last pitfall I will address today, is the "I have arrived" mentality. This is where once a person has succeeded, has the income they desire, they no longer do the things they once did to create the success. I have witnessed this countless times, it is the mind set that says, "I've got it going on, my job is done here" and they stop learning, growing, advertising, or recruiting. "I have arrived" is the worst of the fantasies, and the quickest way to sink your ship. So many times in my experience, I have seen leaders promote, hit a target, then focus all of their time helping their team. The result? Activity decreases or comes to a hault. What leaders fail to realize, is that you set the pace for the team, and if your pace slows, so will the majority. We've all heard the statement, "do what I say, not what I do." Your business will grow as much as you do you, it will never out-grow you.

When you understand the difference between fantasy and reality, the door to true opportunity opens. There is absolutely great opportunities to develop real wealth with MLM, once you know how to succeed based on the real world. You need to take consistent, massive action. It will require you to change your thinking, and learn the laws of leadership. Make a plan for continued education, always striving for excellence, and acquiring new skills. Evaluate your goals at least once a year. Wealth is rewarded to those who plan, and work their plan diligently.

So please, if you are a leader with MLM, equip your team to succeed by giving them proper expectations from the very beginning. Our team members need to hear more than just the big picture, or the success stories. Yes, vision casting and being positive is an absolute must, however, without proper expectations, you are leading with fantasy, and setting your team up for failure. Be real with people, prepare for the challenges, set realistic goals, and equip your team to succeed with MLM. When you do this, you will gain a higher level of respect, and you can create an environment based on truth, for your team to win!
