Childproofing Your New Home
If you are purchasing a home for the first time
, there are many things that you will need to think about. Your will need to consider finances, layout, location, size, neighbors, and so forth.
If you have children or plan to soon have children, there are many other things that you will need to think about as well. You will also need to thoroughly think about local schools, the neighbor's children, safety, and so forth.
It will also be critically important that you examine the home for how child proof it is. You will be lucky if you find an affordable home that is in good condition and which is already set up to be as child proof as possible.
Most likely you will find a home that is somewhat childproof, but which will need a few things added. If you are not yet aware, children are explorers and they will try out everything.
They are not yet acquainted with the world around them or how the world around them works. As they are not acquainted with the world around them, they are very curious, but they do not know the dangers that may be presented to them.
For example, when they find the cupboard under the sink, they will think that it is a cool cave to play in. If you do not catch your child, he or she may think it fun to play in the cleaners and of course when your hands are dirty, what else will they do but lick their hands.
You must watch out for your child and warn him or her of the danger. As you may not be able to prevent all disasters from occurring, taking preventative measures around your home to help you is advisable.
The first thing you should do is make sure all poisons, chemicals, and dangerous objects are locked up. You will also need to remove clutter from your home as dangerous things tend to hide under clutter, but children have a knack for finding and playing with them.
While they may not be dangerous, there are likely to be some things that you treasure and cherish. These thinks may be breakable.
You will want to try to keep your child from playing with these things so that he or she does not accidentally break them. It may be necessary to carefully wrap these things up and store them in a cupboard or box for several years before you pull them out again.
Another safety precaution you may want to take is turning down your water heater. It is common for children to turn on the water expecting it to be a safe temperature because you always did it for them.
Upon sticking their hands in the water that is too hot, they realize that you have been protecting them all along. Then, they will come crying to you with burned hands from the hot water.
The best temperature to turn the water heat to is 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will help protect your children from themselves.
If there is a room or rooms that you do not want your child getting into, such as Dad's office or Mom's sewing room, you should invest in doorknob sleeves and use them. These will prevent toddlers from opening doors of rooms they should not get into until they understand why they should not go into a certain room.
It is also important to use locks on doors that go outside and on windows. However, if there is an emergency you will want to make sure that older children know how to open these things so that they can leave the house.
Another important thing to talk about with your family is what the procedure is when there is an emergency. Be sure to keep escape ladders next to second story windows and that older children know how to use them in case of emergency.
It is also a good idea to post emergency numbers next to the phone so that babysitters or others can contact someone important during an emergency. Smoke detectors should also be placed in each bedroom, stairwell, and other living areas.
Another danger to children are outlets. Do not allow them to poke anything into an outlet by putting outlet covers on every outlet that is not being used.
If your home has a swimming pool or other areas that are dangerous, you should make sure that they are closed off to children. You do not want any accidents to happen.
