Children's weight loss - should high schools provide a weight loss program to our youth
?
High schools in every school district provide excellent education to our youth. Through the course of time when children are attending school they are required to take a gym class, a health class, and maybe a sex education class. That is the closest they ever get to learning about weight loss. Many children go through school being overweight or obese without knowing how to change the way they look or the way they feel.
Obesity is a silent killer! In the United States alone, obesity is ranked among the highest killers (Ohio is ranked 13th). So as you can see, this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Many people do not realize how serious of an issue it is because it goes unnoticed.
I strongly believe that each school district should address the problem before it even begins. One of the ways to accomplish this is to provide children with a weight loss class to teach them the importance of health, nutrition, and how to lose weight. The way the class should be set up is by walking them through health and nutrition step-by-step.
One example of a class requirement can be for the student to construct a weekly diet plan breaking down the number of calories consumed on a daily basis. The students can keep track of their calories and weight loss by creating a chart, which would be turned in. The teacher would have a parent/teacher conference to discuss the student's progress and goals that they have accomplished.
Another example of a class project for the students would be to have a weight loss challenge. The challenge would carry on throughout the course of the program. In the challenge, the students would keep track of their measurements, body fat percentage, and the progress they have made. At the end of the program, the teacher will calculate everyone's body fat percentage and the student with the lowest body fat percentage will win the challenge and be presented with a reward.
In conclusion, there are several benefits to implementing a weight loss program in the school districts. First of all, the students will be educated in health and nutrition, they will know how to count calories, and how to manage and lose weight regardless of their situation. Another benefit of having a weight loss program, the students can get the family involved to teach everyone about health and nutrition and improve everyone's eating habits in the household.
