When buying a new briefcase there are always style and design considerations as well
as practical and functional considerations we take into account even if we do not consciously realise it. In the past it was true that if you wanted to buy a briefcase the choice was simple. You bought a hard black leather case with just a carrying handle, they were all pretty much the same and there wasn't really that much choice when it came to style and design.
It was only up until relatively recently that there was any need to consider different styles and functionality. Some of the factors that brought about this change was the change in high street fashion where more clothes and accessories became available and youth fashion became more prominent on the high street.
There was also the advent of the laptop which meant that people needed a bag to carry around their computers. To start with laptops were quite bulky and heavy and so required laptop bags specifically designed too hold and protect a laptop and all its associated accessories. As laptops became smaller and lighter it meant that you could safely carry your computer in your briefcase which is what many people now do as you no longer need a specialist laptop briefcase.
People are now more aware of the larger choice available and so demand something that not only matches their style but also meets their practical needs. One such style is the satchel, a briefcase that mimics the old style school satchels many people of a certain age may remember. This type of design is now considered retro and is currently in vogue. You may not see many city types carrying their essentials around the city in them but you will see the younger trendies using them.
Depending on how often and how long you will be carrying your bag you should consider whether you need a strap or just a handle. An adjustable strap that is detachable gives you more options as it can be removed. If you are going to be carrying heavy items then a padded strap should be a consideration.
Another useful option is the amount of additional pockets and storage that you have. Many briefcases tend to have an additional large storage pocket cover the whole area of the case. Smaller pockets are useful for carrying smaller items such as usb memory sticks which can often get lost in the main storage area of a bag.
