Choosing the Right Investments for your 401k Account

Choosing the Right Investments for your 401k Account

A few good tips for choosing the right components of your 401k account.

Simply having a 401k is not enough, especially in a struggling economy. Too many people believe that if they contribute money to this type of retirement account, the rest will just take care of itself. It would certainly be nice if your 401k account just ran itself, but this isn't the case. You have to actual do more than make a monthly 401k contribution if you want to build this kind of retirement account. This is a challenge for many, though, and rightfully so. You are likely not an investment banker, so how are you to know what things are best for your 401k?

The nice thing about many of today's 401k accounts is that you don't have to go at it alone. This is especially true of employer-driven accounts. Many employers are highly motivated and they want to provide the best possible benefits for their employees. Because of this, they will often offer some sort of program to make the investing easier. Some employers provide an adviser to go along with the 401k account. Others provide resources. Whether you have a full blown adviser or you just have resources, make use of them. These things are there for a reason.

When you make a 401k contribution, you are essentially putting a substantial portion of your earned income into savings. Though it's not a savings account, it is a form of retirement savings. Since this is the basic plan, you can't get roped into thinking it is wise to take on too much risk. It is important to stick with safer bets when building your 401k account investment scheme. There are other places where you can take chances in your investing, but this account is one meant to build over time. You are basically hiding away money for tax purposes anyway, so don't blow it by trying to get too cute. Include a lot of indexed funds and traditional mutual funds to accomplish this goal.

The nice thing about a 401k contribution is that you can put money in and not have to worry about it. In a perfect world, you would contribute, take the employer match, and go on your way until it comes time to retire. This is not a perfect world, though, so you will need to make the right choices. The best 401k programs will offer different investments options. If one of your options includes a professionally managed fund, then this should be your choice. Professionally managed funds show nice returns and they offer the safety that you are looking for as a 401k investor. You can get nice growth on your investment while also making sure to protect your nest egg as much as possible. It is the perfect match for the type of investor who makes his regular 401k contribution.
