Clear Out The Clutter! Tips For Organizing Your Closets

Have your closets taken on a life of their own

? Is it difficult to locate that special pair of shoes when you need them or are you having trouble fitting new clothes into your closet? Sounds like it is time to take on the chore of clearing out your closets. Follow these tips when tackling the mess living inside your closets.

Start from scratch: The easiest way to get a handle on what is taking up space in your closet is to clear it all out. Give yourself the opportunity to start from scratch when organizing your closet. Clearing out all of the clutter first will also help you sort through it all when determining what you should keep, donate, or toss. Remember, nothing is off limits!

Weigh-in: This is the hard part. Those thin jeans you've been holding onto for the past five years with hopes of one day fitting back into need to go along with that sequin blouse you wore in college. Outdated and poorly fitting clothes have no place in your closet. They just take up valuable space and add to the needless clutter. A good rule of thumb when organizing your closet: If you haven't worn it in the past year, donate it.

Don't mix the seasons: For those tighter closet spaces or for people with a lot of stuff, it may be advantageous for you to organize your closet by seasons. When the leaves start to change color and the brisk fall air moves in, pack up your summer wardrobe to make way for winter gear. While this means you will have to organize your closets more often than once a year, you will benefit from the added space this gives you.

Stack instead of hang: Consider giving your closet a functional make over by installing shelving units and other organizational devices into your storage spaces. By stacking sweaters and other items on shelving units, you can save needed space for those delicate clothing items that must be on a hanger.

Sort it out: Organize your clothes inside your closets. Hang your clothes up according to color or by type (e.g. jeans, sweatshirts, long sleeve tees, blouses). This will make things much easier to locate.

Toss the box: When amassing a large shoe collection, be sure to throw out the shoebox. Shoe boxes take up much needed space in closets and are difficult to sort through when looking for a particular pair. Invest in a shoe organizer that will keep your closet tidy while allowing you to see your shoe collection making it easier to select a pair to wear.
