Colin Montgomerie Wants Woosnam Support

Colin Montgomerie has admitted that he would like Forgan sponsored player Ian Woosnam as a member of his backroom team for next year

. The Ryder cup 2010 will be held at Celtic manor.

Woosnam captained Europe to victory three years ago at the K club. However in June the Forgan player said that he did not want a formal role. Colin is under huge amounts of pressure after Woosie after the good spirit he gained with home crowds against the Americans.

"I didn't hear Ian's comments but at the same time it would be good to have some Welsh support," said Montgomerie, who, in addition to being European Ryder Cup captain is also the chairman of this week's Pound 1.4m Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

"Ian did very well himself to involve Des Smyth within the Irish success. I think that it is always good to have some home nation support and I will be going down that route."

Woosnam, who is thought to be disenchanted with the process of the European Tour's all-player tournament committee that led to Montgomerie being appointed captain, will take a bit of persuading.

"I am more than willing to give him advice if he asks for it, but I feel Monty will have his own people and I just want to be part of what I want to do. I am sure Monty has enough confidence and experience to do the job himself," said Woosnam.

Home support is essential to the teams and this was shown at Valhalla last year when Paul Azinger used every way possible to physic up his last man.

Should Woosnam stick to his guns and insist on doing only the promotional work he is committed to for the Welsh Tourist Board, there is no other with the same charismatic appeal, though Phillip Price, his fellow Welsh Ryder Cup player, could be involved.

Although Woosnam has been captain already, he put himself forward as a candidate for the job at Celtic Manor and also made it clear that if Sandy Lyle was chosen he would support him to the hilt. The tournament committee chaired by Thomas Bjorn, however, decided on a policy of appointing current players rather than over-50s.

There is, moreover, a history of attrition between Bjorn and Woosnam. The Welshman overlooked Bjorn for a wild card in 2006 choosing Lee Westwood instead, and the Dane, who thought he merited a pick, responded by calling the captain "pathetic".

Ian Woosnam will play a massive part in the tournament and Forgan will be backing him.
