Cometishians, a new way to play poker?

A new style of poker tournament has hit town, and it's causing quite a storm. The cometishian.

The apparent problem with the game of poker nowadays is that a lot of people just don't like to play them because of the requirement to spend cash, and one innovative tournament director has created the new format to help tackle this issue that is starting to plague the poker scene.

Unlike conventional tournaments, ones with cash buy-ins and big cash prizes, the cometishian was born to appeal to the masses. It's taken the poker world by storm.

"The problem with tournaments that I have run before, is that they are too exclusive. Too many people come up to me and say, "I just can't afford it." I have had a lot of complaints that the tournament favours lucky players, and they are not a true showcase of skill. That's why we have introduced the cometishian. Free to enter for all. In a variety of formats. It is played for the glory only, a sport. And it's becoming extremely popular amongst our players, and is attracting a lot more new people to the game".

The first cometishian was played in Las Vegas in November 2010. It was popular, with over 6,000 entrants. Infact, it was so popular the casino had to turn people down at the door. The eventual winner, Mrs N Cherry commented afterwards:

"Unlike traditional tournaments, this one was free to enter and we had a great time. I won the entire thing, which was great, I got a lot of glory, something to tell my grand kids. It's not a tournament I usually play, but now I'm ranked one of the best cometishian tournament players in the world, I feel you will be seeing a lot more of me on the cometishian circuit".

However, certain factions of the poker community have not taken to cometishians so warmly.

"It's a stupid luckfest" comments one angry player who was knocked out early after committing all his chips with an ace in the hole. He wished to remain anonymous.

During a recession cometishians hold obviousbenefits. They are free, they are fun. The real test for this new tournament format is going to come when the recession has ended, and people have a bit more expendable cash in their pockets. Will the competishian hold it's own, or will it be thrown in the muck?

Time will tell if cometishians are just a new fad or here to stay, but for now, I'm going to rack up my chips and move to a new table, the cometishian table. I've got a feeling they are here to stay.
