Commercial Pest Control: Explained

Commercial pest control refers to paid services involving the management of organisms

considered as pests that pose any detriment to the health, environment or economy of an individual or a society. It is an age old practice, previously associated with farming and agriculture. In the old days, pest control was implemented to keep the crops in good shape and maximize food production. Currently, pest control is applied for a number of other reasons, including beautification and safety. A few years back, it was mostly done using chemical pesticides and insecticides. But with the green movement, new, natural and less-harmful pest-killing methods have been adapted.

To engage in commercial pest control, a business must apply for licensing and have the appropriate training in handling certain compounds. It can be processed as a franchise, which should make setting up a little bit easier. Or it can be arranged as a start-up, where everything is built from the ground up. Certifications will also be required from governing bodies like the National Pest Management Association so that consumers know you are trained and adequately prepared for the job you are to execute. Establishing affiliations will also be important, especially if you want to be part of forerunning pest control organization in the state or country. But you are not required to make as many because their only role is to provide you with updates on the latest pest control trends and give you endorsements.

On average, the cost of establishing a commercial pest control company is between $10,000 and $50,000. This will already include uniforms, equipment, chemicals and a truck. If one were to consider franchising, an investment of $100,000 will be required. This will cover a lot of miscellaneous expenses already, including the licenses, certifications, affiliation and marketing. For instance, since the brand is already established, the entrepreneur will no longer have to reroute capital to advertising the business because it will attract consumers on its own. But the latter does have its downsides though a topic worth discussing in another post.

In any case, commercial pest control is not for the faint of heart. It is important to reemphasize that this job entails looking through small crawl spaces for creatures like mice, rats, roaches, termites, ticks and ants. And not only will you be chasing after them, you will also be involved in cleaning up their bodies. See, aside from positioning traps, mixing and applying poisons, spraying chemicals and sealing off entry ways and exists, you will also have to do reconnaissance and check whether the interventions implemented yielded desired results.

As of 2010, there were already 68,400 people employed within this industry, earning a median pay of $30,340 annually. It has an estimated growth of 26% per year and is looking forward to employ more than 17,000 new workers. Much of commercial pest control success has been attributed to the fact that it is an in demand service. In the United States alone, there have been several cases of bed bug and termite infestations. And theyre never just isolated in one place.
