Common Home Security Mistakes and How to Fix them:

Making sure the security of our home is effective and sufficient is a preoccupation of almost every homeowner. The home is where we keep our most valuable possessions both in monetary and sentimental terms- not to mention where we share a living space with those who mean most to us- partners, children and other family members. For this reason alone it is worth spending some time thinking about what you can do to improve your home security, and give you and your family that added peace of mind that comes with knowing you are well protected.

The truth is however that when it comes to home security often it is what you don't do that can make the difference. Every single household makes certain mistakes which compromise to a certain extent the security of their home. If you can avoid making these errors, or compensate for them in other sense you can take great steps in improving your overall safety and security while at home. Some of the more common mistakes homeowners make which can be easily avoided include:

Not using an installed alarm: Your alarm is there for one reason only- to deter and stop burglaries. It is useless however if you do not take the time to activate it on a regular basis, and it is left to gather dust in the corner of your hallway. If you have an alarm system you should activate it every time you leave the house unattended, and when going to sleep for the evening. This way you will make the most of the protection it affords you and your family.

Ignoring the first floor of your house: Statistically speakingit is most likely that should there be a burglary or intrusion at your home thieves will enter through the ground floor. This doesn't mean however that you should ignore other possible entry routes into your property- many people do though. The same homeowners who are religious about locking their doors on the ground floor are often guilty of leaving balconies and large windows open and thinking it's safe. Lock these when left unattended just as you would those down below- another good security measure is to cut back any trees that hang especially close to your home, thereby eliminating them as a means of gaining access via the first floor.

Not taking care while on vacation: Don't leave your common sense at home when you leave for a vacation- this is the time when your home security is most at risk, and burglaries most common. Try to make it look like the house is still occupied to avoid drawing attention to it; cancel regular deliveries, use timer switches to mimic normal light patterns, and try to leave a car in the drive for added deterrence. Also make sure any home security systems you have are activated and ready to be used.
