Common Myths About Braces
The thought of visiting a dentist or an orthodontist might have got you goose bumps many times
. One needs a lot of courage to visit a dentist and when your dentist suggests you to visit an orthodontist, it means double penalty. You again have to develop the same courage to visit the orthodontist. Now if he suggests you to get braces, all the blues of wearing braces come to your mind. Living with braces is very uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing. You may get several funny names due to these weird looking structures stuffed into your mouth.
Like these, there are many kinds of myths associated with braces that prevent people from visiting Fort Collins orthodontist and wearing braces. The first myth about wearing braces is that these hold your teeth very tightly. Making a child wearing braces is many times taken as a punishment by the child for doing something wrong. Even many adults feel like their braces are more of a punishment device that gets tighter and tighter with time. The fact is that the braces that are constructed today are made from flexible metal wires which adjust into the dental structure and are not tight at all. Now if this is giving birth to another myth that if they are not tight, then they are ineffective, then you are again mistaken.
The metal braces may not be as painful as the earlier ones but they still keep on working when you are wearing them. They may cause a little pain but it doesnt mean that they are not working or are slow at showing results. Another belief of people about a Fort Collins orthodontist is that they make the patient wear the braces for longer time than what is actually required. People feel that the teeth have already been aligned and there is no need of wearing the braces now. But they forget the fact that orthodontists are professionals who have taken professional training of two years in addition to the four year dentistry course and have dealt with many similar cases before they actually became orthodontists.
When you trust orthodontists, it becomes their responsibility to ensure you get the best results in the least time. Modifying the position of the strongest bone of the body takes much more time than healing of a wound. You must have heard about cases when a doctor for bones will make a person wear the plaster for more time than initially suggested by him. It is case specific as sometimes the bone takes a bit longer than the time it is expected to take its place. It becomes dicey when it is related to the way you look. It may also be the case when you get free from your braces earlier than expected as the teeth took their place faster.
The last negative notion associated with braces is that this will make them look weird and people will start avoiding them. This thinking generally arises in teenagers and pre-teens. To avoid this, you can use clear braces which are invisible but do the same thing as the metal braces. These are never noticed by anyone but are equally effective.
