Considerations When Choosing A Crib Mattress
For new or expectant parents, taking a quick look at a crib mattress
, when considering matching one up with a crib, is the time when it's necessary to start setting up the new baby's room. Keep in mind that, above all else, safety should be the key word when it comes to a baby's mattress. After that should come the need for a mattress to be comfortable.
Generally speaking, it's fairly easy to find the right size mattress for a crib because they only come in a few standard sizes, depending on whether the crib is for a newborn or one that's just a little bit older. Still, it's always wise to measure crib dimensions before running out to buy a new mattress, because it's important that there be little or no gap between the mattress and the crib sides.
In order to test a crib and mattress set for a snug fit, just take two fingers and try to squeeze those fingers between the mattress and the sides of the crib. If it's possible to do so, a slightly larger mattress is probably called for. Generally, only one finger should be able to slip snugly between crib sides and mattress sides.
It's also important that a baby mattress be reasonably firm. Babies, after all, don't have the strength or coordination to roll themselves back over when they find themselves on their stomachs. A mattress that's too soft could end up developing a potentially-dangerous depression in which the face of the baby could find itself resting within.
It's also a good idea, when it comes to mattress covers, for parents to spend a few extra dollars to get quality versions. That's because babies are great at bringing back up what their parents have just put into them, after a feeding. These fluids can cause damage to an unprotected mattress, as well as permanent and ugly stains. Look for covers that are durable and have multiple layers.
What might surprise many is that good baby mattresses actually aren't expensive, in relative terms. Considering that most everything related to a baby costs extra money, this comes as a pleasant surprise, one would have to admit. Usually, a good mattress can be bought for anywhere from $70 to $100, though other specialty, hypoallergenic or organic mattresses can cost several hundred dollars.
Always take the time to make sure that any crib mattress comes certified by either Underwriters Laboratories or a reputable mattress manufacturing association. Mattresses must meet certain federal guidelines and they should be fairly firm so that a baby's face won't find itself resting within a depression, as well. And they should be safe above all else.
