Continence Health – Why You Need A Professional Opinion
Continence Health Why You Need A Professional Opinion
Almost everyone will experience an episode of incontinence in their life but if your problem seems to be happening more frequently then it's time to visit your medical provider for a continence assessment. This is not a big deal, it's not intrusive and it's extremely important for your continence health.
Incontinence by itself is not a disease it is a symptom of some underlying condition. Often that underlying condition can simply be your lifestyle and simple changes can relieve you of the embarrassing condition. Other times the causes can be more serious such as infections, nerve damage or even cancer. You can view your incontinence as a sort of early warning system that alerts you to seek medical help.
A continence assessment begins before you even step into the doctor's office. Usually your physician will ask you to keep a bladder diary for at least two weeks before seeing you. This diary is basically a record of how often and when you use the rest room, what you eat and what and how much you drink. Having this detailed record will be of great assistance to the doctor in evaluating your condition.
The continence assessment is a two part process with the first part being an interview to gather data about the problem. The bladder diary will answer most of the questions but there will be others about family history as well. I some instances incontinence is genetically driven. Knowing if any of your relatives experienced continence health problems will greatly assist your doctor in his or her assessment.
Part two of the assessment consists of taking a urine sample and conducting a physical exam. The urine sample will determine if the bladder and urinary tract are functioning correctly and will also spot any infections that might be present. The physical exam will focus on the strength of the pelvic floor muscles. This muscle group plays an important role in supporting the bladder and protecting it from outside stresses. In addition to examining this muscle group, males will undergo an examination of their prostate gland to check for abnormal size.
Once the results of the urine test is available your doctor can render an assessment based on the test, the interview and the physical exam. There are a wide array of treatments for incontinence ranging from diet and exercise to surgical procedures. Most doctors will prescribe the least invasive therapy first and see how it works before moving on to medication or surgery.
Your continence health is important for your overall health and you should not hesitate to consult with your doctor if you are experiencing a problem.
