. Coorg is a hill station which lies on these mountain ranges. Kodagu is the at populated town in Karnataka. The name of the place is Kodagu because the tribe that settled here long long ago was called Kodagu. These people occupied the region and named the region after their name and even their language is known by the same name. The hill station of Coorg is best known for the amazing quality of coffee this place produces. Other than Kadagu, these people also speak Kannada which is the native language of the people belonging to Karnataka. The name Kodagu got modified to its current form as time passed and is now known as Coorg, a short and crisp name also easy to remember. People of the neighbouring reigons and districts also speak the Kodava language. The place never really had a script but in the recent past, Coorgi-Cox alphabet was developed by Gregg M. Cox who is a very famous German linguist. The coffee beans grown here are exported to other parts of the world. The writing system is being used by a number of people belonging to this place. Madikeri is the capital region of Coorg but something not very convenient is that this town does not have a railway station or airport. The nearest railway station is in Thalassery and Kannur, both in Kerala, and Mangalore, Hassan and Mysore in Karnataka. The airports nearest to this place are in Mysore and Mangalore. New Mangalore Port in Mangalore is the nearest sea port to Coorg. Road connects the towns capital with other neighbouring regions of Mangalore, Mysore, Bangalore, Kannur and Hassan. You can take the popular Ghat roads to reach Coorg from coastal regions of Kerala and Karnataka.
Talakaveri is the origin of Kaveri river and is very important religiously for the people following Hindu religion. On the bank of the river, there is a Brahma temple which is actually one of the two available in the entire of India and also South East Asia. Most of the population constitute of the Kodava people who are the people belonging to the ethnic tribe of Kodagu. But apart from the Kadava people, you will also find people belonging to other communities such as Muslims and Kodagu Gowda. Minor tribes in this region include Kurubas, Heggade, Koleya, Koyava and Kudiyas. Although the main earning comes from cultivating rice, coffee export brings in a good amount of money too. The Kodava people worship many god some of which are Bhagwathi, Bhadrakali, Subramani and Iggutappa. Coorg is rated among one of the best hill stations in India.
