Costa Blanca Low Life
One hour's drive from two international airports, and within easy reach of the more frenetic high-rise resorts of Benidorm, Altea, Calpe & Javea, lays the distinctively low-rise former fishing village of Moraira. Extending from the enchanting Jalon Valley, following the gentle, glide path of terraced vineyards to the cosy bay, cradled between the twin headlands of Cap d'Or & Cap Blanc, you will find the Costa Blanca's best kept secret holiday destination.
With no more than a small clutch of maybe half a dozen family run, low rise hotels within the town, most of Moraira's visitors are restricted to either villa owners or villa renters. These factors endow Moraira with its unique relaxed village feel and ensure a relatively stable population throughout the year neither deserted during the winter months, nor overwhelmed during the peak of summer.
There is little here to attract the more rowdy all-night revellers, Moraira being more appreciated by families and couples of all ages and nationalities. Whether your preference is to baste and roast on the beach or by your private pool, drive off and explore the spectacular scenery of the surrounding valleys and mountains, or enjoy the watersports, squander the kids' inheritance in the smart shops and designer boutiques, or enjoy the cuisine for all budgets, of more than a dozen different countries and regions in the myriad local restaurants. Moraira is the smart choice for casual sophistication and an opportunity to share in the relaxed lifestyle enjoyed by its cosmopolitan residents.
The local Marina Alta' coastline is a fascinating blend of vast, safe, sandy beaches, pebbly bays and rugged rocky coves. Moraira specifically, has two gently shelving, sheltered, sandy beaches: El Portet and l'Ampolla hugely popular with the Spanish and visitors alike. For diving and fishing, try the crystal water of the Calas (coves) Portichol & l'Andrag, which, together with the twin secluded coves of Les Platgetes and Punta de l'Estrella form an exclusive stretch of coastline with probably more blue flag awards per kilometre than anywhere else on the Mediterranean.
Whether you want to sail or fish from the harbour and marina, windsurf, snorkel, scuba-dive or just dip a toe in the not so cool sea, Moraira offers something for everyone.
